Special Feature: "Gateway Part 8" by Caryn Mirriam-Goldberg, Contest Judge

Gateway Part 8
Caryn Mirriam-Goldberg, Contest Judge

from the Tao Te Ching

8. You cause it whenever you want.

Like sunlight. Like air.
The motion past the window --
what was just here? Hummingbird.
Hedge apple the size of a baseball
growing to the size of a softball.
Too many tomatoes and cicadas.

Don't worry about scarcity.
Whatever small stone you pick up
to hold in your palm lets you feel
the small weight and lightness
of one body of time.

Editor’s Note:  The Poet’s Notes for “Gateway” may be found in the introduction to the first part of this ten part poem  “Gateway” was previously published in The Midwest Review.
