E. Ethelbert Miller (b. 1950) is the Founder and Director of the Ascension Poetry Reading Series, and the Director of the African American Resource Center at his alma mater, Howard University. He is the author of several published books of poetry and the recipient of prestigious awards and honors. "Postcards" was meant to be deeply personal, as the poet's notes reveal. However, the message is obvious to the point of being cliché. The final line deviates significantly from the otherwise fairly uniform free verse for reasons which are unclear, and ends with a preposition.
