Poetry Review Special Feature in Honor of Mother's Day: "Mother Bear" by the Editor

Mother Bear
Steven Wittenberg Gordon

The mother bear will allow her cubs a little
freedom--just enough for them to safely
learn and explore their forest home--but though
the cubs may not perceive her as they romp
and play she is never far and ever ready
to intervene should any threat however
small seek to harm her furry brood,
for there is nothing more dangerous than a mother
bear defending her cubs--this is love
without condition, without regard for her
own safety or life, and when the day shall come
that her cubs must go forth to claim territories of their own
the mother bear will be there by not being there
though it break her mighty heart--that is love too.
