Review of "The New Year" by Emma Lazarus
"The New Year" by Emma Lazarus (1848 - 1887), perhaps most famous for her poem that adorns the base of the Statue of Liberty, was offered by Poets.org's Poem-A-Day in honor of Rosh Hashanah on September 7, 2013. This is a moving poem by a great poet. It has an epic feel, like that of a prophet speaking. It is rooted in themes from the Torah, but Ms. Lazarus makes them sing with a universal sound as fresh as the hope of the new year she heralds as though with a blast from a shofar (pictured).
