Review of "Get Up, Please" by David Kirby
"Get Up, Please" by David Kirby was offered by Poets.org's Poem-A-Day on September 16, 2013. The poem describes a moment of epiphany in the poet's life when he learned the meaning of the Indian custom of bending down to touch the feet of a revered person. The revered may, or should, respond to this sign of respect by saying, "Get up, please." The piece finishes with a bit of nostalgic sentiment with the poet regretting that he missed the opportunity to show this sign, or perhaps any sign, of respect to those who have become "the 'mighty dead,' as Keats called them."
